About Me

Welcome to my blog!
I'm an American married to a Kashmiri Indian.
I have always loved to cook, inspired by my mother who owned a small restaurant for many years. To me cooking is an art, the only art that involves all five senses - sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound. I love exploring and learning about other cultures through their fascinating cuisines.
When I first moved to South Asia 15 years ago I was amazed at all the different cuisines and cultures from the high Himalayas to the island nation of Sri Lanka. After mastering many traditional Kashmiri dishes from observing my Kashmiri mother in law, I wanted to learn more dishes from all the different regions of the Subcontinent.
I have a collection of over 70 cookbooks covering the various cuisines of India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bangladesh. Unfortunately, I find most of them to have overly complicated recipes that are rather poorly written and difficult to follow. That is why I started this blog featuring Desi dishes made easy. Simple recipes from all over South Asia as well as Western recipes adapted to suit Subcontinental tastes and dietary preferences. All the recipes in my blog are easy to follow and are suitable for both beginners as well as experienced cooks. I often use modern timesaving techniques and appliances to get the same traditional flavors. All of my recipes have been tried and tested many times and served to my Indian family. Most of my dishes have also been served at the many dinner parties my husband and I love to host.
I'm also including educational features describing the incredibly varied Desi ingredients, cookware, and cooking techniques used on the Subcontinent. I'll also include some brief pictorial essays on life in rural Nepal too.

I can be reached at calmlycookingcurry at gmail.com

Thank you for visiting my blog and please join me in my culinary adventures across the multitudinous cultures and cuisines of Desi-dom,

Bibi

PS:
To Westerners who may not know what the term "Desi" means, from the legendary oracle of Wikipedia:
Desi [d̪eːsi]
"A loose term for the cultures and products of the Indian Subcontinent or South Asia and their diaspora, derived from the ancient Sanskrit देश (deśá or deshi) meaning "land" or "country." Desi countries include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka."
